Whites Tree Frog
Overview
Whites tree frogs are some of the most commonly kept pet frogs. This adorable tree frog has a ton of character and if cared for correctly and can be great for pets. Like all amphibians, Whites tree frogs have semi-permeable skin which means that not only can they secrete through their skin, but they can also absorb a through their skin as well. For this reason, these amphibians need to have special care taken when setting up their habitat, handling, and daily care.
Feeding
Whites tree frogs are primarily insectivores. Given the opportunity, they are also known to eat small mammals, reptiles, and other frogs in the wild, though it is recommended to stick to feeding strictly insects in captivity.
Dietary supplementation
Whites tree frogs need special vitamins in minerals added back into their diet. In the wild, the insects that are eaten by the frogs have been naturally exposed to, and carry with them vitamins and minerals from their diet and interaction with the pollens and plants in their environment. These vitamins and minerals are then passed to the individual that preys upon such insects. In captivity, insect feeders are most commonly farm bred and raised without the natural exposure of these vitamins and minerals and therefore these key components need to be added back into their dietary regimen. These supplements include:
Special considerations
Handling
As with all amphibians, special care should be taken if and when handling is done. Their semi-permeable skin is sensitive to absorbing substances in the environment and therefore gloves should be worn if handling is necessary to protect your frog from absorbing any harmful residues left on your hand. Powder-free latex gloves are a great choice. These frogs typically have a high tolerance for handling but as is true for any species, this can differ between individuals, and it's important to tailor handling frequency to the comfort levels of your frog. Though these frogs have a higher tolerance to handling, it is not necessary for the quality of life of your frog and therefore they will be perfectly happy if never handled.
